DC To AC Power inverters convert 12, 24 or 48V DC power stored in batteries to mains AC (110 or 230V).
Inverters allow you to use appliances normally run from the mains in mobile applications where you only have access to battery power. The uses for inverters are very widespread from being able to use domestic appliances on yachts to power tools on service vehicles.
Merlin was possibly the first company in the UK to begin distributing modern switch mode inverters around 15 years ago and as a resullt, has invaluable experience in both specifying and supplying top quality products. Inverters vary dramatically now in terms of cost and quality, so using Merlin as your supplier can offer significant long term benefit.
Broadly inverters can be split into two technologies:
Modfied Sine Wave (MSW)
These inverters produce an AC waveform that mimicks grid power but actually has a number of steps within the cycle rather than being a smooth sine-wave. This leads to some drawbacks:
- They are incompatible with some equipment. Appliances that employ their own switch mode power supply, digital timers, AC motors and pumps do not run well (somtimes at all!) from MSW inverters
- You will notice interference and a background buzz on audio visual equipment
- By virtue of their use in the wider mass-market and low cost, they tend to be of a lower build quality and overall quality. Specifying MSW inverters for professional applications requires experience and care to ensure customer expectations are met
Pure Sine Wave
These units produce AC power virtually identical to household mains and therefore the drawbacks of MSW (above) are avoided. Build qualities are usually also much better although there is still a wide choice available, so matching a unit to the application sucessfully can still be an involved process.
Inverters Within Power Systems
